The Mesozoic palaeorelief of the northern Tian Shan (China)
The Tian Shan range offers a natural laboratory to study orogenic processes. Most of the previous studies focused on either the Paleozoic evolution of the range or its Cenozoic intracontinental evolution linked with the India-Asia collision. In this study, detailed field investigations on the relationship between sedimentary cover and basement constrain the Mesozoic evolution of the northern Ti...
متن کاملDetachment folding in the Southwestern Tian Shan–Tarim foreland, China: shortening estimates and rates
Geologic observations of the Chinese Tian Shan foreland reveal active, contractional deformation along the entire margin. To quantify the amount of shortening and understand the structural style, we mapped the stratigraphy and structure of four folds expressed at the western end of the foreland, north of Kashi. In this region, upper Tertiary through Quaternary sediments are conformable, but an ...
متن کاملActive flexural-slip faulting: A study from the Pamir-Tian Shan convergent zone, NW China
The flexural-slip fault (FSF), a type of secondary fault generated by bed-parallel slip, occurs commonly and plays an important role in accommodating fold growth. Although the kinematics and mechanics of FSFs are well studied, relatively few field observations or geometric models explore its geomorphic expression. In the Pamir-Tian Shan convergent zone, NW China, suites of well-preserved FSF sc...
متن کاملMagnetochronology of the Upper Cenozoic strata in the Southwestern Chinese Tian Shan: rates of Pleistocene folding and thrusting
The southwestern Chinese Tian Shan of Central Asia is an actively deforming part of the Indian^Asian collision system. Paleomagnetic investigations of two Plio^Pleistocene terrestrial successions provide the first detailed magnetostratigraphy for the upper Cenozoic strata in this region. Paleomagnetic samples were collected from 358 sites within the Atushi Formation and Xiyu Formation across th...
متن کاملMagnetostratigraphy of the Yaha section, Tarim Basin (China): 11 Ma acceleration in erosion and uplift of the Tian Shan mountains
We report a magnetostratigraphic and rock magnetic study of the Yaha section, located on the southern flank of the central Tian Shan mountains, Asia. Our results show a twofold increase in sedimentation rate as well as marked changes in rock magnetic characteristics ca. 11 Ma. After 11 Ma, sedimentation rate remained remarkably constant until at least 5.2 Ma. These findings are consistent with ...
